Our Story
Overlooking the ocean, our genuine train setting, paired with the history of two wooden coaches, creates a unique ambiance. These were built in 1919 and 1921 respectively, then transported by ship from England to South Africa where they served a luxury rail company until they were decommissioned and made their last journey by rail to join our fleet in December 2013 now boasting a colonial feel, authentic woodwork, private sea-view decks, and ensuite facilities.
The lodge expanded to include a restaurant, bar, and upgraded accommodations, aiming to provide the complete experience of staying and dining in an authentic South African train.
A setback in August 2007, with a fire destroying the train restaurant and offices, led to a resilient effort to reconstruct and restore the authentic atmosphere.
Our commitment extends beyond providing unique accommodations; we aim to preserve transport heritage. The current owner, involved since 2001, shares a passion for trains and history preservation. Recognised with the Sanlam Top Destination Award for Ungraded Lodge in 2016 and 2017, the Santos Express Train Lodge continues to attract national and local celebrities while contributing to the rich tourism appeal of the Garden Route.
