As winter will graces our shores soon here at Santos Express, visitors are in for a breathtaking display as Southern Right Whales make their annual return from the Antarctic Ocean. These majestic creatures travel over 10,000km to our coastline for calving and mating.
The Southern Right Whales, known as colossal marine giants, provide an awe-inspiring sight. The spectacle, typically lasting only a few seconds, involves the massive body rising from the sea, gracefully turning in the air, and then descending with a 30,000 kg splash onto the sea surface before disappearing beneath the foam.
After a brief interval, the whales resurface, navigating the ocean waves. Observing this natural ballet is a truly memorable experience.
Experts explain that the playful behaviors of the whales include aerial displays (a communication function), tail slapping (communication between mother and calf), spy hopping, curiosity, floating, sailing (temperature regulation), mating, and flipper slapping.
Adding to the grandeur is the impressive display of breaching, with water spouts rising high into the air from their blowholes. The distinctive “bulk” sound of the blow is unmistakable, prompting some to liken it to the deep, bass note of a cello from a Bach sonata or perhaps the iconic “I Want to Break Free” by Queen.
Last year, there had been a notable presence of mother whales with their calves. It’s fascinating to think that the tiny calves consume an astonishing 600 liters of milk per day!
For those seeking a remarkable encounter with these marine giants, Santos Express offers a front-row seat to witness the grace and wonder of Southern Right Whales during their annual sojourn along our coastline.
